This collection of three lessons empowers students to identify steps toward problem-solving, evaluate possible solutions, and making the best and most-informed decision toward a solution. Lesson 1 teaches students to list steps for solving problems, and increases their understanding of the problem-solving process through activity and discussion. Lesson 2 enables students to identify a variety of possible solutions for a problem, evaluate the feasibility and effect of the solutions on themselves and others, and make an informed decision. Lesson 3 applies the previously-learned steps to a real-life issue, asking students to choose at least three possible solutions to a specific problem, and verbalizing the potential effects of each option. The conversations and activities in each lesson increase the students’ awareness of others, and encourages respect, integrity, caring, honesty, and social justice. The lessons are 45 minutes long and are meant for an entire class, utilizing small-group time as well. Each of the two lessons includes a detailed lesson plan, lists of materials needed, and questions to help guide a constructive conversation.
